Barclays cash machines down
As reported by The Daily Mail as well as BBC News, Barclays suffered a hardware failure that affected the operations of both 1500 cash machines and their online banking on June 16. Apparently thousands of customers were unable to retrieve cash from ATMs or conduct online banking tasks for at least 3.5 hours.
That is a significant outage and likely somewhat embarrassing for the bank – people need to be able to access their cash. It is a bit of a trust issue. One obvious lesson for consumers: Plan with failure in mind. In this case that means keeping emergency cash available and not postponing online banking tasks till the last minute.
